ANORECTAL SURGERY

DR. ADEM DERVİŞOĞLU, MD. Professor

Anorectal diseases are diseases that affect the anus (rectal) and the last 12-15 cm long rectum part of the large intestine. Although there are many diseases and ailments, hemorrhoidal diseases (arteriovenous vascular cushions), anal fissures (occlusive fractures), perianal fistulas (occlusive fistulas), and pilonid sinus (ingrown hair) are the most common conditions in general surgical practice.

The exact frequency of the diseases in this region is not known because patients are afraid and embarrassed to seek medical attention from a doctor. Since the disease is common and patients avoid the examination out of shame, the patient uses various methods of treatment without consulting a doctor. Unfortunately, a belated diagnosis of perianal or rectal cancer can therefore affect the patient’s life. The patients should be examined by specialists and examined thoroughly with radiological or endoscopic examinations before the operation.

The specialist doctor should determine the methods of treatment according to the patient’s symptoms, the type of disease (internal or external hemorrhoidal disease), the degree and complications. During treatment, it should be remembered that the disease progresses with relaxations and repetitions. It is worth noting that advertisements for guaranteed healing methods are just empty promises. Approaches like a definitive solution in treatment, permanent or guaranteed in 5-10 minutes, 100% success and termination of hemorrhoids are not possible and involve medical and ethical issues.

Although operations using classical surgical methods are widely used, it is recommended that operations be performed using high-tech equipment in order to reduce the patient’s post-operative pain and return to normal life and work early. In conclusion, performing the operations with these devices has less tissue damage, less discomfort, and faster recovery. The laser method is another recommended method. The use of a thin laser probe for hemorrhoid and fistula surgery has increased in recent years.
